Is your Rublev German vine black oil paint made from a different pigment from your German vine black dry pigment? In “Black is Black,” you say that the Rublev German vine black oil paint is inorganic, made from a black earth pigment, containing natural oxides and carbon, and was named historically for the earth that farmers would apply to grape vines to keep insects off. The Rublev German vine black pigment though is described on the Natural Pigments website as charred grape vine shoots, made of mostly carbon. I understand it’s best to stay away from using a pure carbon black in oil paint. But it’s confusing that “vine black” can be used to mean an organic carbon-based substance as well as an inorganic mineral earth substance. Am I understanding this correctly? These are different pigments, both called “vine black”? Or am I missing something?

Originally, it was charred vines, but the source is gone and we decided to replace it with a similar color that is an earth pigment. We will be reintroducing a black made from charred vines next year. Charred vines do not produce pure carbon, but a mixture of carbon and calcium phosphate, similar to bone black.

I see. So it’s kind of like how your Cassel Earth oil paint is made from an umber pigment, but it resembles the historical lignite-containing pigment? In the case of Cassel Earth, the substitution with an umber pigment makes the color more stable. While in the case of Vine Black, it has been a matter of supply.

Natural Pigments produces bone black, which is the same as ivory black. In reality, no company makes ivory black because it is illegal to trade in ivory.
