Ceracolors encaustic question. Once again I am enjoying using these for small scale paintings. They handle well on a variety of heavy weight water media papers and even mineral paper. These can later be adhered to a panel.

    Questions:

    1) Can a cold wax medium/varnish be used to seal the painting? No need of glass on top? Is there another way to seal them w/o glass?

    2) I have panels I prepped myself for casein paintings using a casein based gesso. Since those are absorbent, can they be used as a substrate for Ceracolor paintings?

    3) If an underpainting is done in casein or Acryl gouache, can Ceracolors be used for final layers?

    4) Can one make their own ceracolor paint by using a water based pigment dispersion or dry pigment wetted with disperse water and then mixed with ceracolor gel medium?

    Answers:

    1. You can add a protective layer over Ceracolors by applying Ceracolors Fluid Medium over the painting. This is similar to applying cold wax but without solvent.

    2. Any absorbent, waterborne ground can be used as a ground for Ceracolors.

    3. Ceracolors can be applied over casein and likely over Acryl Gouache (although we have not tested the latter).

    4. You can make colors with Ceracolors Gel or Fluid Medium and dry pigment powder or aqueous pigment dispersion.
