Description
The April Technical Studio Session challenged one of the most repeated rules in oil painting: fat over lean. But if “fat over lean” is not the real answer, what should artists use instead?

This Cohorts meeting continues that discussion by focusing on how paintings are actually built—layer by layer—and why structural compatibility matters more than simplified rules.

We will look at:

Why paint films fail: cracking, sinking-in, wrinkling, delamination, and softness
How pigment volume concentration (PVC) and critical pigment volume concentration (CPVC) help explain paint behavior
Why solvent use changes structure more than most artists realize
How grounds, underpainting, body color, and glazes interact physically
How to think about “strong” versus “weak” paint layers in practical
