Description
This month’s Cohorts discussion builds on the recent Impasto Without Regrets Technical Studio Session and examines how paint structure, material selection, and layering strategy affect the long-term stability of oil paintings.
Rather than focusing on theory alone, this session will analyze practical studio decisions that influence the durability of impasto and layered paint structures. Topics will include the causes of water-sensitive oil paint, how pigment and medium choices influence polymerization, and how traditional layered painting methods help maintain structural integrity in thick paint passages.
We will also examine how historical methods—such as verdaccio underpainting and stratified layering seen in Rembrandt’s The Night Watch—offer practical models for building optical de
