Priming Panels for Hardwood and MDF Supports
Hello, I am wanting to produce my own wood supports for oil painting. I am concerned with longevity and the structural integrity. I am trying to figure out how to make the most stable ground layer for priming wood and(or) MDF supports for oils. I would like to know:
(1) if sizing a panel prior to applying a ground is necessary or beneficial;
(2) if beneficial or necessary, would the VAE fluid medium be the most stable choice underneath the lead oil ground; and
(3) if not necessary, would the panel be just as stable a support if I merely applied the lead oil ground directly to the wood or MDF panels?
As I understand things now, my plan has been to use “hardwood” boards (quarter-sawn or rift-sawn, if available) and MDF hardboard panels, and to size all sides with possibly a VAE fluid medium before applying the lead oil ground. But from the last cohorts meeting, I believe I heard that sizing is not necessary to apply to wood support.
