Priming Panels for Hardwood and MDF Supports

    Hello, I am wanting to produce my own wood supports for oil painting. I am concerned with longevity and the structural integrity. I am trying to figure out how to make the most stable ground layer for priming wood and(or) MDF supports for oils. I would like to know:

    (1) if sizing a panel prior to applying a ground is necessary or beneficial;

    (2) if beneficial or necessary, would the VAE fluid medium be the most stable choice underneath the lead oil ground; and

    (3) if not necessary, would the panel be just as stable a support if I merely applied the lead oil ground directly to the wood or MDF panels?

    As I understand things now, my plan has been to use “hardwood” boards (quarter-sawn or rift-sawn, if available) and MDF hardboard panels, and to size all sides with possibly a VAE fluid medium before applying the lead oil ground. But from the last cohorts meeting, I believe I heard that sizing is not necessary to apply to wood support.

    If you glue primed canvas or linen or another support to your panels, you typically don’t need to size.

    Under a lead oil ground you should definitely apply a coating to prevent oil from the ground and paint to penetrate the wood. I believe one coat of Rublev Fluid Medium is sufficient (for oil, two for acrylic).

    1. It is unnecessary to size wood unless you want to reduce its absorbency or make it more uniform.

    2. Rublev Colours Fluid Medium is a good choice as a size for canvas under an oil ground. it is unnecessary for wood.

    3. Applying oil ground directly to wood is sufficient and stable.

      Thank you George!

      Again, thank you all so much for what you are doing with Natural Pigments and PBP. You’re all awesome! 🙂
