I know you do not recommend oil paint over “Clear Acrylic Polymer”. But am confused about terminology: Senso makes a heavyweight (14oz) linen that has “Universal Acrylic Primer”. It’s a clear primer that lets the lovely gray linen show. My ques; is “Clear Acrylic Polymer” the same as their “Universal Acrylic Polymer”?

Have a portrait done on this Senso product that is 2 yrs old, no probs or lamination issues detected. It is painted thinly.

OOPS: Sorry. that was a typo. Senso’s product says “Universal Acrylic Primer”. So is Acrylic Primer the same as acrylic polymer?

Although acrylic primers contain acrylic polymers, they are not transparent since they also contain pigments. So, the issues regarding applying oil paint over clear or transparent acrylic polymers do not apply to acrylic primers. However, you wrote that your painting is on Senso Clear Primed Linen, which is an entirely different issue. This product is advertised as linen “primed with clear, acrylic primer gesso.” This statement is an oxymoron because gesso denotes a compound of gypsum or whiting, which this clear coating does not contain, so the issues associated with oil paint over clear acrylic polymers do apply to your painting on Senso Clear Primed Linen.
