    Hi George,

Natural Pigments, Rublev Traditional Silverpoint Ground is my favorite commerical metalpoint ground. I understand the chalk and silica content (good fillers, high Mohs hardness) and titanium (opacity, hardness) – but what about talc? I’ve added a small percentage of talc to other metalpoint grounds (synthetic polymer based) and it does seem to improve mark making (ever so slightly) but I don’t understand why, since it’s MHS is 1. What properties does talc contribute to a metalpoint ground?

    Answer:

Not all substances in Silverpoint Traditional Ground are there to improve marking, but for other properties such as bulk, density, leveling, etc.
