How long does the acrylic layer need to dry?

There have been some aside comments in a couple of threads in this group and others about the need to let acrylic dispersion ground (aka acrylic “gesso”) or acrylic paint dry/cure for some amount of time before painting with oil over the top so that there is no moisture left in the the acrylic layer that might compromise the long term stability of the painting.
How long does the acrylic layer need to dry/cure before it is considered safe to either put down a layer of alkyd based ground or oil paint directly? What about if using acrylic based products like matte medium or modeling paste – do the same rules apply?
