Casein & oil paint-When painting on a mixed media/watercolor hot or cold-pressed acid free paper with casein paint, I have adhered the ones I like onto ACM panels. I use NP mounting adhesive (lovely adhesive). On occasion, I like to develop the painting further with oil glazes on top. I have sprayed the casein layer 2x with Spectrum fixative (a mixture of just casein & denatured alcohol). Is this enough barrier to seal the oil paint layer from the paper? Should I use something else like shellac? I like the absorbency of the casein as an underpainting for oils when applied on prepped panels, but not sure about paper? I do let the casein layer cure for at least 1 week before laying down oil layers.

    Answer:

Spectrum Fixative is hydrolyzed casein in an ethyl alcohol vehicle. It will not provide a sufficient barrier as the oil will likely penetrate it and the casein. This can be easily tested by using a dropper to place four to five drops of linseed oil onto the prepared surface. Wait some time and examine the reverse side of the paper. If you see an oil mark you know it does not provide a barrier.
