This course will deepen your understanding and application of color in oil painting, with a special focus on the nuanced world of Chromatic Blacks. The on-demand video is designed for artists who are eager to explore beyond the surface of their canvases and delve into the scientific and artistic marvels of paint mixing. We first provide definitions for blackness and jets, two important methods to quantify black, and then describe different methods of mixing chromatic blacks from common artists’ colors. Finally, we compare chromatic black oil paint (convenience mixtures or hues) and black oil colors.
