Half-Oil Grounds
Hi all, I’m currently experimenting with different ways to prepare supports for oil painting, trying to find a mode I can use long-term. I currently prefer a recipe for what we call in German a “half-oil ground” that is composed of rabbitskin glue, chalk, lithopone and linseed oil varnish. What I like about it is the color (with a white is not as powerful and cool as titanium white) and the smell. I use it for both wooden panels and canvas.

It guides towards using acrylic and titanium white based gesso as commonly found in art supply stores applied in thin layers and, more importantly for me, gives advices against oil-based grounds. Now I wonder if I should worry about my half-oil ground? It is commonly used by painters in my area but I have no detailed knowledge about how the paintings age (though older paintings from the last decades I’ve seen to do okay). Do you have any knowledge and experience on this? Should I switch to acrylic gesso?
