How to Oil Out and Correct Your Paintings with Varnish

This course gives you the skills to overcome these issues in painting

Matte, glossy, and irregular sheen on an oil painting can disfigure its appearance. After applying varnish, the irregular sheen on the paint surface results in a patchy gloss. This course shows you how to fix this on an existing painting and how to avoid it in the future.

High pigment volume concentration (PVC) is the most common cause of irregular sheen on paintings, which occurs when the oil in freshly applied paint “sinks” into the underlying absorbent substrate. One of the most frequently encountered issues while teaching artists in Painting Best Practices workshops is “sinking in”. This is a common phenomenon among oil painters.

In the course, we examine the causes of sinking in. We discuss the common practice of “oiling out” (or sometimes “oiling in”) and its disadvantages. The course presents the best practices to correct irregular sheen and how to select and apply varnish and get the best results in your art.
